“Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”

Join us as we devote December to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe by praying a novena together as a community from December 4th – 12th, ending on her Feast Day. The Our Lady of Guadalupe novena is not merely a series of scripted prayers; it is an intimate dialogue between the person praying and the Virgin Mary.

Our Lady of Guadalupe holds a special place in the hearts of millions around the world. This iconic image is not just a religious symbol, but a cultural phenomenon that transcends boundaries and connects people in profound ways. The story begins in December 1531, when a humble man named Juan Diego experienced a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary on the hill of Tepeyac, near present-day Mexico City. During these encounters, Mary spoke to Juan Diego in his native language, conveying a message of love, compassion, and the desire for a shrine to be built in her honor.

Our Lady of Guadalupe told Juan Diego,

“Listen, put it into your heart, my youngest and dearest son, that the thing that frightens you, the thing that afflicts you, is nothing: do not let it disturb you… Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need something more? Let nothing else worry you or disturb you.”

In a pivotal moment during the apparitions, Mary instructed Juan Diego to gather flowers from the hill, despite the harsh winter conditions. Miraculously, he found roses blooming on the barren landscape, and when he presented them to Mary, she arranged them in his tilma (cloak). When Juan Diego unfolded his tilma before the bishop to reveal the flowers as instructed, an even greater miracle occurred.

Imprinted on the fabric was the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Our Lady of Guadalupe quickly became a unifying symbol in the early years of Spanish colonization, bridging the gap between the European conquerors and the native people of Mexico. Her image served as a catalyst for the conversion to Christianity and the blending of cultural traditions. Today, she is not only venerated within the Catholic Church, but has also become a cultural icon and a symbol of Mexican identity.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, built near the site of the apparitions, is one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world. Millions of pilgrims from various corners of the globe travel to this sacred site to express their devotion and seek spiritual solace.

Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to captivate the hearts and minds of believers and non-believers alike. Her story is a testament to the enduring power of faith, cultural integration, and the ability of a simple image to unite diverse communities.

Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Memorare of Our Lady of Guadalupe

(to be prayed each day)

Remember, O most gracious Virgin of Guadalupe, that in your heavenly apparitions on the mount of Tepeyac, you promised to show your compassion and pity towards all who, loving and trusting you, seek your help and call upon you in their necessities and afflictions. You promised to hear our supplications, to dry our tears, and to give us consolation and relief.

Never has it been known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly to you, O Mary, ever-Virgin Mother of the true God! Though grieving under the weight of our sins, we come to prostrate ourselves before you. We fully trust that, standing beneath your shadow and protection, nothing will trouble or afflict us, nor do we need to fear illness or misfortune, or any other sorrow.

O Virgin of Guadalupe, you want to remain with us through your admirable Image, you who are our Mother, our health, and our life. Placing ourselves beneath your maternal gaze, and having recourse to you in all our necessities, we need do nothing more.

O Holy Mother of God, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer us. Amen
