“Conquering the Darkness: Triumph of Mercy, Hope and Healing” unites Catholics and other Christian peoples October 12 to 20 in global movement of prayer and fasting
SEPTEMBER 10, 2024 – WASHINGTON D.C. International Week of Prayer and Fasting co-founders and hosts, Ted and Maureen Flynn, are calling Christians from around the world to join them for the 32nd International Week of Prayer and Fasting from October 12 to October 20, 2024. This year’s theme is “Conquering the Darkness: Triumph of Mercy, Hope and Healing.”
“It may feel darker than ever, but with prayer and fasting, Our Lady says we can conquer the darkness,” said Ted and Maureen Flynn, founders of the International Week of Prayer and Fasting annual event. “Every year we bring this world-wide movement of prayer and fasting to Catholics and other Christian peoples to inspire prayer and fasting for world peace, conversion of hearts and the building up of a culture of life. Right now, there is an escalating urgency to draw all faithful people to an intensified week of prayer and fasting. Wars, civil unrest, crime, human trafficking, addictions, natural disasters and the killing of the innocent necessitate that people of God turn to Him, and make sacrifices through prayer and fasting to tear down demonic strongholds.”
The global gathering will begin with a live on the ground event that kicks off the 9 days of prayer and fasting on October 12.
“The spiritual weapons of our age are basic: prayer and fasting,” said James Wahlberg, author, filmmaker and evangelist. “The grace to know how to war spiritually isn’t enough, we have to encourage others to pick up these practices together to battle the evil that confronts our world today.”
The in-person event will take place at St. Mary of Sorrows in Fairfax, VA, on Saturday, October 12 with a day of prayer, Eucharistic adoration, Mass, the Rosary, and talks featuring powerful speakers including: Bishop Emeritus Robert J. Baker; Fr. Dan Leary; Alexis Walkenstein; Dr. Segunda Acosta; James Wahlberg; and Dan and Stephanie Burke. There will be a Mass at 9:15 a.m., celebrated by Bishop Emeritus Robert J. Baker, STD.
“Christ has won the victory over sin, suffering, death, and every form of evil,” said Bishop Robert J. Baker, Bishop Emeritus, Birmingham, AL. “Through our prayer and fasting He brings healing to our lives and hope to our world.”
“We have brought together some of the most dynamic and faithful Christian speakers to inspire an international audience with wisdom, witness and the practical ways to bring more prayer and more fasting into the lives of the faithful,” said Ted and Maureen Flynn. “You don’t want to miss this gathering. No matter where you are in the world, this is a Divine appointment for every believer. You are called to step up your spiritual life and be equipped for the battle. Join us virtually and join our army of prayer.”
In the days following the Opening Day of Prayer, special guest speakers will address the Virtual Conference on October 14, 15, and 16, including: Dr. Antone Raymundo; Fr. Jason Lewis, MIC; Susan Brinkmann; Fr. B. Thomas Celso, B.D.V.; Joan Maroney; Fr. Robert Altier; Sr. Deirdre Byrne; Maureen Flynn; and Fr. Dan Reehil.
“Join us as we kick off on Saturday, October 12, and be inspired by incredibly anointed leaders who will impart a renewed spirit of prayer and encourage fasting as a way to conquer darkness,” said Ted and Maureen Flynn. “People do not need to feel powerless in the face of the many grave evils we are witnessing around the world. Our incredible speakers are going to impart wisdom from their own witness in the world and practical application of prayer and fasting. The great Saint John Paul II said, ‘Jesus Himself has shown us by His own example that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil.’”

“We can change the course of history, world events, and appeal to the merciful heart of God as we pray and fast,” said the Flynns. “Our Lady has instructed us and assured us of this. Prayer and fasting might seem like antiquated practices in a modern world, but they are the very practices that every Christian soldier needs in the spiritual war against evil. We are in critical times at every level – societally, politically and in the family. Our entire civilization is at a crossroads. We are here to remind you, equip you and encourage you to press in with renewed fervor to move the heart of God with our prayer and fasting. Together, we will see miracles.”
